- Quick TOS Feb 16. 1990
- =======================
-
- By Darek Mihocka of Branch Always Software, makers of Quick ST.
-
- Go from TOS 1.6 to TOS 1.0 in two seconds flat!
-
- Quick TOS is freeware and may be distributed freely by any Atari ST
- bulletin board or user group. No fee must be charged to obtain this
- program.
-
- Quick TOS allows disk versions of TOS 1.0 and TOS 1.4 to be loaded from
- the hard disk. Other disk versions of TOS may exist and should work too.
-
- Why would somebody want to run an old disk version of TOS anyway? This
- program came about as a request from an Atari dealer who received a lot
- of complaints about software not running on the Atari STe. He gives each
- of his STe customers a copy of TOS 1.0 on disk so that they can run the
- problem software on the STe. He asked me if there was a better, and
- Quick TOS is a slightly better solution, if you have a hard disk.
-
- This is also the same problem that some people have experienced with
- TOS 1.2 and TOS 1.4, so Quick TOS can also be used with Mega ST and
- TOS 1.4 incompatibility problems.
-
- Quick TOS can run from a floppy, but there is little speed advantage
- compared to just rebooting.
-
- After writing this program, I realized that this is also a very convenient
- way for me to change TOS without changing machines. Up until now, I have
- been swapping my 520ST, 1040ST, and 1040STe to change TOS. This is a lot of
- wear and tear on the computers, the cables, and on me! With Quick TOS, I
- can easily run one version of TOS, then another, then another, without
- changing machines or even turning the machine off.
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- To use Quick TOS, you must have a disk version of TOS. I know, these may
- be difficult to find, but most Atari dealers have a copy in reserve for
- customers who have compatibility problems with newer versions of TOS.
-
- Since TOS is copyrighted, I would assume that it is not legal to post
- the contents of that disk to bulletin boards. Trust me, Atari is very
- picky about letting people distribute old copies of their operating
- systems. <grin>
-
- Ok, let's assume you now have the disk. Copy the file TOS.IMG to your
- hard disk. I would suggest creating a folder called TOS10 or TOS14 on
- one of your partitions. Make sure there is at least 250K of free space
- on that partition.
-
- Now copy QUICKTOS.PRG to the same folder as TOS.IMG. Double click on
- QUICKTOS.PRG and a few seconds later, your machine will boot up in the
- older version of TOS.
-
- If you currently boot your hard disk from floppy, keep that same boot disk
- in your disk drive when running Quick TOS. This will allow the new TOS,
- or should I say, old TOS, to load the hard disk driver.
-
- If you have a hard disk autobooter installed, you will have to create such
- a boot disk. Format a new floppy, create an AUTO folder, and copy into
- it AHDI.PRG or whatever hard disk booter you may be using.
-
- Note that the program CAUTO.PRG does not seem to run with the disk version
- of TOS 1.0 but does run with the disk version of TOS 1.4. It may be
- necessary to copy your other AUTO folder programs and accessories to the
- boot floppy as well.
-
- If you have both the disk versions of TOS 1.0 and TOS 1.4, create two
- separate folders, one called TOS10 and the other TOS14, and copy the
- appropriate TOS.IMG file to each. Then copy QUICKTOS.PRG to each folder.
-
- If you use Hotwire or Neodesk, you can attach a hot key to Quick TOS so
- that TOS 1.0 is never more than a keystroke away! Of course, just the
- thought of that could make some poeple sick.
-
- Note that the disk versions of TOS are not exactly identical to their
- ROM counterparts. For example, I found that TOS 1.0 on disk is actually
- quite a bit faster than TOS 1.0 in ROM. Another good reason to get rid
- of TOS 1.0 ROMs.
-
- Well, that's about all you need to know. If anyone has any problems,
- drop me some email or call me.
